Judy Needles
WFRW President 2007-08

July-August, 2007

Dear WFRW Members,

Summer is always such a busy time for us. But it is also an important time.

In July we recognize our country’s independence and the birth of democracy. This holiday is one of the most important ones we can celebrate. When they adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, our leaders took an enormous risk. The Declaration of Independence is more than just a piece of paper being stored in the National Archives in Washington, DC. It is a symbol of our country’s commitment to freedom. Those of us living in this country today owe a great deal to our founding fathers for their wisdom and for their courage. If you have not read or re-read the Declaration of Independence recently, I urge you to do so.

One of the benefits of being a citizen of our country is being able to vote. Remember that the State Legislature moved our Primary Election up to August 21st this year. This is the first time we have had a primary this early. The goal of an August date is to allow our County Auditors (Records and Elections in King County) the time they need to count the returned ballots from the Primary, allow the local Canvassing Boards time to resolve disputes, and still allow time for the Auditors to prepare and mail the ballots for the November Election.

This is an odd-numbered year with mostly local, non-partisan races on the ballots. Keep in mind that you may not even have a Primary Election where you are registered to vote. Primary elections are held only for those positions where there are three or more candidates. So if only two people are candidates for a school board position, or the city council position, etc., that race goes directly to the General Election on November 6th.

By the way, have you moved or changed your name since you voted last? If so, you need to contact your Auditor and make sure they have your current information. And if you are going to be out of town, ask your Auditor about having the ballot mailed to your temporary address.

Voting is important. Your participation is vital. Remember the Declaration of Independence and what it cost those who signed it. When you cast your ballot, say thank you for our Founding Fathers … and remember to also give thanks for our brave military men and women who help keep our great country free.

Karna Bodman has agreed to speak to the WFRW at a special buffet dinner on Friday, September 7th. I hope you will make your reservations soon – we look forward to seeing you there.

                                                                                                  With all best wishes,

                             Judy Needles
